When the Emirates Racing Authoroty (ERA) revamped their website they decided they also wanted a better solution for their users on mobile devices. Find out about more about our mobile offline first app below.
The requirements were simple, provide as much information to users as possible and make it work offline or in locations where network coverage might be patchy. We decided on an offline first approach for this build. After reviewing all the available database solutions we settled on using PouchDB on the mobile app along with React Native to build it. On the server side we built a highly resilient CouchDB cluster which provides realtime replication services to thousands of concurrently connected clients.
Because of the design of the app, any time the client has available network coverage a live replication is running ensuring we are delivering live updates to race results in a matter of seconds to all the clients, but not only that any time they are offline we provide them with a cached copy of that data, and the opportunity to get live data once connectivity is re-established. Taking an offline first approach has ensured clients always have the latest possible data available to them.
The overall look and feel of the application was created by the design agency JFD Design who were building the new website, and the app provides a slick, clean, modern design allowing the users to see the race calendar and then drill down into every race day, to see the enttries, and results, and see historic data on horses, trainers, owners and jockeys. The project was delivered to tight timelines ensuring that it was ready for the start of the 2023-2024 racing season, and we continue to deliver new features, and support and maintain the platform for them.
